0.8 million population of Baltistan region cut off from country after key bridge damaged

GILGIT: Baltistan region has cut from the rest of the country after a bridge on the Skardu-Gilgit Road has damaged and closed for all kind of traffic.

However, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has started repair of the Shaheed Bridge to restore traffic. The bridge was damaged when a truck got stuck in it on the night between Friday and Saturday.

The bridge is the only source of communication for the heavy vehicles that links Siachen and others strategic areas of the Line of control. Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah visited the damaged bridge and ordered immediate restoration of the traffic.

Baltistan region’s about 0.8 million population will now face an acute shortage of food and other basic commodities.
