KOLKATA: The Border Security Force (BSF) seized a kilogram of gold ornaments and nearly 16 kg of marijuana (ganja) close to the Indo-Bangladesh border. On Sunday, troops of the 01Bn BSF, posted at the Mysimpur Border Outpost in the Bagda police station area of North 24-Parganas police station acted on specific information and challenged a person attempting to cross the international border through dense crops.
“On being challenged, the man dropped a plastic bag and fled, taking advantage of the crops. On opening the bag, several bangles, chains, lockets and ear tops were found. The total weight of the haul was nearly one kilogram. The ornaments have been handed over to the customs department. In the first few months of 2015, the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier has seized nearly 12.75 kg gold and apprehended 11 smugglers from several places along the international border,” a senior officer said.
On Saturday night, troops of the 43Bn BSF posted at Narsharipara BOP in Murshidabad received information of an attempt to smuggle narcotics across the border into Bangladesh. A special operation was launched around 11 pm near the Maluapara BOP to trap the smugglers. When the smuggler approached with a bag on his head, the BSF jawans challenged him. He dropped his load and fled through the crops. The bag contained nearly 16 kg ganja. In 2015, the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier has seized more than 307 kg ganja and apprehended five smugglers.
