NEW YORK: Trading Standards officers are finding it impossible to cope with the tens of thousands of illegal or dangerous hoverboards flooding into the UK’s biggest port.
The health and safety inspectors have been under huge pressure as the must-have gadgets pour into Felixstowe, Suffolk, from China and the Far East for the British Christmas market.
Staff are being stretched to the limit – with an astounding 20,000 of the 30,000 hoverboards checked at the container gateway ruled either unsafe or illegal.
The numbers are now so vast that Trading Standards agents have admitted that they simply cannot check them all.
A spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Council-based unit said they take note of where the two-wheeled balance boards are going before tipping off the relevant authorities that they are on their way and require a thorough checking.
