OSLO: The 50,000th plug-in electric car was registered in Norway, with the milestone being reached much sooner than the government anticipated after introducing tax exemptions on electric cars in 2012.

In 2012 the Norwegian Parliament created a goal of hitting 50,000 zero emission vehicles by 2017. Initially they said that the guaranteed tax benefits would be cancelled either in 2017 or whenever the target was reached.

However, now that the target has been reached, it seems as if the tax exemptions are going to remain in force until 2017.

Apart from tax benefits, drivers of electric cars also get access to bus lanes in Norway, free parking in municipal parking zones, and free “refueling” in most of the public charging stations.
