MEXICO: A Cameron County constable said six men who crossed over illegally from Mexico were stranded for 10 days without food and water. They were forced to smuggle bundles of marijuana, and now they’re in Border Patrol custody.

The six Mexican nationals were stranded on Long Village Island. The small island is in Port Isabel, right off the Laguna Madre.

A few of the men went to search for food and water. A resident spotted them and called Cameron County Constable Pete Delgadillo.

“When I got there, the three male subjects were gone,” Delgadillo said. “I ended up calling the federal department agency, which is Border Patrol.”

The Border Patrol searched for the men for nearly two hours. The men and the bundles of marijuana were found.

Drugs coming across Port Isabel doesn’t happen often. The men still managed to get the bundles across the border.

“Sometimes it takes a while, it all depends on the weather,” Delgadillo said.

The six men told Delgadillo they were forced to smuggle the drugs.

“Some of these illegal aliens get threatened by the cartel in Mexico… they’re risking their lives,” Delgadillo said. “When they come and we interview them… they say they get threatened.”

Delgadillo said he saw rope marks all over the men’s bodies. These showed how long the men were carrying the bundles.

The constable said the resident who reported the crime did the right thing. Anyone who sees any illegal activity should report it to their local authorities.
