ENGLAND: The Japanese car maker says around 8000 Toyota Echo models and 260 Toyota RAV4 SUVs will need to have airbag modules checked and replaced.
The cars in question were built between 2002 and 2003.
The manufacturer already recalled around 1700 Corolla and Avensis Verso models built between 2000 and 2004. Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Honda, are among several manufacturers that have also moved to replace problematic airbags in local vehicles.
Toyota says no Australian customers have been injured as a result of faulty airbags.
But a number of people have died in accidents overseas when faulty airbags exploded dangerously.
Manufacturers have recalled more than 17 million cars around the world as a result of the faulty airbags. More than 110,000 cars in Australia have been affected by the problem.
Owners of Toyota RAV4 and Echo vehicles built between 2002 and 2003 should contact Toyota to see if their car is affected.
