JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java, has posted a 300% increase in cruise ship passengers arriving at the port in 2014 over 2013.
In 2014, cruise ship tourists numbered 7,218 people, up from 1,762 tourists in 2013, a spokeman for state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Pelindo III) said here the other day.
Port calls from cruise ships increased from three to 11 vessel arrivals over the same period. Pelindo III says the increase is due to improvements in infrastructure and services.
In October 2014, Tanjung Perak Port launched a new cruise terminal named Gapura Surya Nusantara, which is able to handle two liners simultaneously and a throughput of 4000 passengers. Around IDR160bn ($12.6m) has been invested in the new terminal.
