SYDNEY: The new S 63 Coupe of Mercedes-AMG is now on sale in Australia at priced from $409,000 – including $29,900 in GST and a further $80,103 under the Luxury Car Tax.

As the first variant in the new S-Class Coupe range to hit Australia, the S 63 will be a tough act to follow.

The $319,000 S 500 Coupe will take a swing in the second quarter of this year, though, while with the V12-powered $499,000 S 65 Coupe won’t struggle to win friends.

Driving the S 63 is AMG’s venerable 5.5 litre biturbo V8, churning out 430kW of power and 900Nm of torque.

Tied to the company’s seven-speed SpeedShift dual-clutch auto, the big eight boasts a 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds.

Official fuel consumption figures are equally impressive, listed at just 10.2 l/100km – thanks in great part to the V8’s idle-stop system.

AMG has also shaved 65kg from the kerb weight of the S 63 Coupe’s predecessor, and the company promises a power-to-weight ratio of 3.41kg/hp.

There’s also an enhanced sports-tuned version of Mercedes’s curve-tilting corner control, leaning the car into corners, and braking is managed by big 390mm front and 360mm rear discs.

Standard kit in the S 63 includes 20-inch five-spoke alloys and AMG’s sports styling and aero kit, along with Nappa leather interior, AMG sports steering wheel, heated and powered seats, a 12-inch display with sat-nav and cameras, Keyless Entry and Go, dual-zone climate control and digital radio.

Safety equipment kicks off with eight airbags, lane-keeping assist, cross traffic alert, cross-wind and drowsiness detection, Distronic Plus proximity control, PreSafe with automatic braking and pedestrian recognition.
