Dell XPS 13 to nudge Apple MacBook Air, 5.2mm thinnest notebook border with Broadwell-based Intel Core i5

WASHINGTON: Dell’s new XPS 13 nudges Apple’s MacBook Air from its perch to be the new standard of thin. According to the company, the XPS is 23 percent smaller to the MacBook Air 13 despite the same size screen. The laptop features an innovative design that frees screen with the thin bezel.

More importantly, Dell has also included a borderless infinity display that sports a 5.2mm border – this is the thinnest to be featured on a notebook yet. Guaranteeing at slim bezel at less than 2 percent, users are treated to more screen space. To make things more interesting, Dell pushed the design to its limit creating a computer that only measures 9-15mm thick and 2.6 pounds or 1.18kg.

Investorplace commends Dell’s take on the ultrabook saying that it “blows away any pre-conceived notions you might have of Dell as the producer of boring, enterprise-grade computers.” IT World agrees claiming “yes, it truly is better than the Macbook Air.” The report also explains Dell’s possible edge over Apple: the faster Broadwell-based Intel Core i5 in the XPS. Apple’s current MacBook Air selection only comes with a 1.4 Ghz Haswell-based Intel Core i5. However, Apple still does it best with maximizing computer and device potential so experience may be subjective depending on the user.

The Dell XPS received several awards at the CES 2015 defeating MacBook at the game it plays well according to Investorplace. However, the fight may not be over as the Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly preparing its 12-inch MacBook Air update.

Chinese Apple blog iFanR published a series of shots claiming to be the 12-inch Retina MacBook Air. Should the images prove true then these are the first true images of expected device. On close up, the display is smaller than the usual 13-inch screen but taller than the present 11-inch unit supporting the 12-inch predictions.

On the side, the images show an extremely thin build around a few millimeters thicker compared to the iPad Air. The cover on top does not bear the well-known glowing Apple logo. According to AppleInsider, the tech giant may have chosen to forego the trademark to make way to the extremely thin metal chassis. However, Apple has not made any announcements yet so everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
