TOKYO: Mercedes-AMG is readying the extra-hot racing version of its new GT coupe, expected to unveil on upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

Dubbed simply ‘GT3’, the hot new special will replace the successful SLS AMG GT3 in the FIA’s GT3 racing formula.

There, the new AMG GT3 will face off against the usual assortment of Porsches, McLarens, Lotuses, Astons, Audis, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and others.

2016 Mercedes AMG  GT3 race car teaser 01 Sketches released reveal that we can expect a wide new aero kit for the special AMG GT3, accommodating a wider track and larger wheels, along with massive intakes and vents.

The requisite GT racing wing will feature at the rear, and we can expect a stripped-out and caged-up racing fit-out in the cabin.

The GT3-ready AMG GT will be available from early 2016, the company says, and we might even see a toned-down roadgoing version follow.

Speaking with the UK’s Autocar recently, AMG boss Tobias Moers hinted at a new ultra-hot special version of the GT road car.

‘Why not?” he told the paper. “A street-legal version of our GT3 racing car – that sounds like a pretty good idea.”

Moers went on to hint at a kerb weight around 80 to 100kg lighter than the regular GT, which is itself already 80kg lighter than the SLS AMG that came before it.

A 410kW output is also rumoured for the new special, which could also give the car a greater power-to-weight ratio than the 911 GT3.

Don’t expect it to be called Mercedes-AMG GT3, however.

“GT3 belongs to the other company,” Moers said, referring to the 911 GT3. “We will find another name for our car.”
