SINGAPORE: Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers and Customs Department seized 1,205 cartons of contraband cigarettes and 135kg of chewing tobacco at Tuas Checkpoint here the other day.
ICA said that the goods were hidden in modified compartments of a Malaysian-registered bus. The driver, a 33-year-old Malaysian man, had been stopped for checks in a joint operation with Singapore Customs upon his arrival at about 6.15am.
The duty and taxes of the cigarettes and chewing tobacco amounted to about S$133,820 and S$11,820, respectively.
