WASHINGTON: Apple seems to take on Samsung and Google over the virtual reality concept as it has awarded a patent to the headset for displaying the images.
The patent (number 8,957,835), which was first filed in September 2008, describes a head-mounted display that allows users to couple and decouple a handheld portable electronic device with a separate head-mounted device.
It states that the portable electronic device may be “operatively coupled” to the head-mounted device, so that they can communicate and operate with one another. This connection may be wired or wireless.
“The frame may place a display screen of the portable electronic device in front of the user’s eyes,” the patent reads. “The display screen of the portable electronic device may act as the primary display screen of the head-mounted device.”
The system would allow users to view media including television and feature films while travelling, according to the patent.
