NAIROBI: Kenyan police have arrested more than 100 Ethiopians in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi for being in the country illegally. The 101 men revealed that they were heading for South Africa and had stopped in Kenya for refreshments when they were nabbed by officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit.
Police say the suspects had arrived earlier Monday from Ethiopia in separate buses, when an informer tipped them off. The men did not have travelling documents to show that they were here legally. They are deemed illegal immigrants head of SCPU Noah Katumo was quoted saying by the Standard newspaper.
The aliens are expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday morning for being in the country illegally. Police and immigration officials have decried increased cases of Ethiopian aliens being nabbed in the country while on transit to either Tanzania or South Africa. Kenya is leading in human trafficking and smuggling incidents in the region, as the country is considered a big source, transit point and destination.
