LAGOS: Not less than N20.9 billion was generated as revenue by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Nigeria’s second busiest port, Tin Can Island Port (TCIP), Apapa, Lagos in January 2015. The amount generated by the NCS in TCIP is against the N21.5 billion generated the corresponding period of 2014.
This was disclosed by the Customs Area Controller (CAC), NCS, Tin Can Island Area Command, Comptroller Zakari Jibrin in a statement issued in Lagos.
Giving a breakdown of the revenue generated by the command, the CAC said the command generated N12.6 billion from import duty, N6713, 114 from excise duty, N486, 615,376 from common external tariff (CET) and N23,498,025 from fees.
In the same vein, another N36, 060, 000 came from negotiable duty credit certificates (NDCC) otherwise known as promissory notes while N3,959,448,350 was from the five per cent value added tax (VAT).
According to him, TCIP Customs Command also realised a total of N6.7 billion non-federation accounts. While N892, 212,737 resulted from seven per cent levy, N190, 536,991 was from NAC; N1, 117,528,504 from the one per cent CISS; N633, 348 from ETLS and N101, 795,954 from sugar.

Many stakeholders have attributed the drop in the revenue of the command to the decline in business activities, especially imports and exports.
The decline in the volume of business in the command has been traced to the uncertainty in the economy arising from the rescheduled 2015 general elections and reduction in the falling value of the naira following the dwindling price of crude oil in the international market.
Meanwhile, NCS Headquarters Monitoring Team, Idiroko led by Assistant Comptroller of Customs Yahaya Usman Biri, has seized 82 bales of used clothes and 19 bales of used bags worth N10.1 billion.
Acting CAC, Federal Operation Unit, Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, Mr. Usman AdamuTuraki, who disclosed this in Lagos said the items were intercepted by team following a tip off.
According to him, a Mercedes Benz truck BJE 175 LG packed full with the contraband items was intercepted by members of the team along Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Turaki, a Deputy Comptroller (DC), hailed the leadership of the monitoring team for their exploits, just as he pointed out overtime, the team had proven their competence, capacity and efficiency at work.
