MOSCOW: Scientists at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have declared that Yamal Peninsula of Siberia is becoming porous rapidly with the passage of time.
According to researchers, a sinkhole that measures 260 feet in width was reported in the region in 2014. Now, it has been suggested that up to 30 more might litter the cold earth. Russian scientists have reported about seven craters in total and five are in the Yamal Peninsula.
Moscow scientist Vasily Bogoyavlensky of the Oil and Gas Research Institute said that he expects to discover more. “I would compare this with mushrooms: when you find one mushroom, be sure there are few more around. I suppose there could be 20 to 30 craters more”, added Bogoyavlensky.
