Suzuki unveils its new small hatch iK-2 concept with new platform, new turbo engine

TOKYO: Suzuki has launched its new iK-2 concept, revealing a first look at the company’s coming step into the ‘small hatch’ segment. In most western markets, Suzuki’s hatch range is limited to the tiny new Celerio and the light Swift, along with the small S-Cross crossover.

Already confirmed for a 2016 production schedule, the new iK-2 will debut as a rival to the likes of the Toyota Corolla and other models in the small-car market.

The iK-2’s dimensions place it an odd middle point, however, measuring 4023mm long and riding on a 2520mm wheelbase, while the Corolla features a 2600mm wheelbase and measures 4275mm long.

It is nonetheless larger than the Swift, which features a 2430mm wheelbase and an overall length of 3850mm.

New Platform, 1.0 litre Turbo Engine

Importantly for Suzuki, the iK-2 also boasts an all-new platform and, perhaps of greatest interest to enthusiasts, a small new 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine dubbed ‘BoosterJet’.

Details of that powerplant are still to be revealed, although Suzuki has confirmed a direct-injected design.

The new platform is designed around increased rigidity and reduced weight, while optimising overall vehicle design.

The new architecture will form one of three modular platforms, allowing the brand to roll out more new models at a faster and more efficient pace.

This change is in line with confirmation last year that Suzuki intends to launch two new cars each year for the next three years.
