SYDENY: A RARE and bizarre looking shark caught off the NSW Far South Coast earlier this year will take pride of place in the Australian Museum.
Goblin sharks aren’t seen very often and are captured even less, so the museum’s latest acquisition has some curators very excited.
This particular shark, which the museum refers to as the ‘alien of the deep’ and measures about four feet, was caught by a fisherman near Eden earlier this year.
With soft, flabby pale skin and a long protruding snout, the Goblin shark has small sharp teeth that are used to spear its prey, a feature that differentiates it from others in the shark family.
