CAPE TOWN: The South African Revenue Service Customs team at O.R. Tambo International Airport seized more than 41 kilograms (90 pounds) of rhino horns with the aid of a trained detector dog called Mimmo.
Mimmo reacted positively to bags carried by two foreign nationals traveling from Maputo to Vietnam via Johannesburg, SARS said in an e-mailed statement. Inside the bags, customs officials found horns valued at more than 4.5 million rand ($407,000). This is the biggest seizure of rhino horn by the SARS customs team at the airport.
Both individuals and the horns of the endangered species were handed over to police for further investigation.
