HONG KONG: Chile’s Villarrica Volcano, which erupted in spectacular fashion late Tuesday, appeared calm following “joint and coordinated efforts and preventive measures happening in the region,” according to a statement issued Wednesday by Turismo Chile, the government tourism agency.
Nevertheless, “because Villarrica Volcano is one of the most active volcanos in Chile, its activity is being permanently and rigorously monitored through 22 surveillance systems,” the statement said, quoting Michelle Bachelet, Chile’s president. The monitoring will continue, she said.
The Villarrica Volcano is located 470 miles south of Santiago, Chile’s capital city, in the country’s Araucania region. The government has restricted travel within a six-mile radius of the volcano’s crater as a safety measure. Tourist attractions affected by the volcanic activity include the Villarrica National Park and its ski center, the Challupen-Chinay Trail, the region’s volcanic caves, the Rio Turbio Trail and the Ruca Pillan Fair.
