LONDON: Pesky cockroaches scattering for cover at the flip of a light switch often evoke fear, disgust and sometimes flight. But the bolting bugs’ actions suggest the insects have personality and exhibit problem-solving skills, according to a Reuters report.
Scientists at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles conducted a three-month experiment, using light, to determine how cockroaches make decisions. They found that it took varying times for each insect to move to a shelter to escape the light, indicative of variations in personality and behavior, Reuters said. The insects, which are partial to groups, ultimately all congregated under the shelters, suggesting they reached a consensus, the researchers said.
Reuters said the experiment provides new information on how cockroaches are able to adapt and survive.
