TORONTO: Canadian criminal lawyer Laura Liscio is scheduled to appear in court to face allegations of smuggling drugs into the Brampton courthouse.
Peel Regional Police allege the 32-year-old brought drugs into the courthouse on the morning of Feb. 12 and was subsequently arrested in her court attire.
According to the Toronto Star, the charges come after marijuana was found in clothing provided to an inmate who was set to appear before a judge.
Police had initially said the lawyer was not handcuffed in her court attire but later retracted the statement.
“It has subsequently been determined that the information that was originally relied upon was in fact incorrect,” Peel police said in a media release.
Following her arrest, Liscio was also escorted by both uniformed and plainclothes officers to a marked cruiser.
Liscio was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking, obstructing justice, and breach of trust.
The Toronto Lawyers Association has since called the manner of the arrest “unjustified and unnecessary” as well as demanding an inquiry into her treatment.
