Data is allegedly being stolen from Indian government and defence establishments by a Tranchulas, a Pakistani cyber security firm, according to US security firm, FireEye.

In an investigation carried out over two years, FireEye discovered that Tranchulas was making use of leased US hosting services to carry out its attacks.

Refuting claims by FireEye of the attack still being active, the Indian government said it was entirely unaware of the attack.

“They are essentially penetrating Indian government accounts to find out what the Indian government is up to,” Manish Gupta, senior vice president, FireEye.

Tranchulas did not confirm or deny its involvement in cyber espionage.

FireEye added that Tranchulas used ‘Sarabjit Singh’, Devyani Khobragade’, ‘Salary hikes for government employees’ and other similar terms in the subject line of the e-mails to ensure officials opened the e-mails with the malware.

FireEye said the malware had been active since the early part of 2013.
