US brass mill imports rise 1.1%, exports 8.8% in January: Fabricators Council

WASHINGTON: US imports and exports of brass mill products rose in January compared with the corresponding 2014 period, the Copper & Brass Fabricators Council said.

Brass mill product imports totaled 40.1 million lb in January, compared with about 39.7 million lb in January 2014, an increase of 1.1%. Exports totaled 20.2 million lb in January, up from 18.6 million lb in the year-ago period, an 8.6% increase.

Mexico was the leading destination for US exports of brass mill products in January at nearly 7.5 million lb, followed by Canada at 5.8 million lb, South Korea at 1.5 million lb, China at 671,287 lb and Saudi Arabia at 553,959 lb. January imports from Germany totaled 9.6 million lb, followed by South Korea at nearly 7.1 million lb, Canada at 3.4 million lb and Mexico at 4 million lb, the Washington, DC-based trade group said in a report.

Imports of all sheet, strip, plate and foil products totaled 13.3 million lb, while exports of those products totaled nearly 8.7 million lb.

Imports of all pipe and tube products totaled 12.8 million lb, while pipe and tube exports totaled 3.1 million lb, the CBFC said.

Imports of all profiles, rods and bars totaled just over 11 million lb, while exports totaled 6.8 million lb.

Imports of copper alloy wire totaled 2.9 million lb, while exports totaled 1.6 million lb, the CBFC said.

Brass mill products are widely used in building construction, automotive products, and in electronic and electrical applications.
