Inquiry pertaining to surcharge shortfall reported in vehicles amnesty scheme enters in its final phase

KARACHI: The inquiry pertaining to the shortfall reported in the surcharge amount in connection with the import of vehicles under Amnesty Scheme has entered into its final phase, it is learnt here on Wednesday.

The reliable sources informed Customs Today that the inquiry committee’s head Additional Collector Irfan Javed has called for some related documents in the case from the alleged Customs officials, through departmental representative (DR) of MCC-Appraisement (West).

“The inquiry is being conducted against six Customs officials, who were deployed in car group (Group-VII) on that time and the committee head during the course of inquiry into the case asked for submitting some important documents before him, which are related to the case”, sources added.

They further disclosed that the inquiry has been entered in its final stage and would be completed soon, most probably in the first week of April 2015.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) nominated ADC-Irfan Javed as committee head for inquiring the matter in the month of November, last year.

Subsequently, the departmental representative was appointed in the month of January 2015 who acted as focal person between the committee head and the alleged Customs officials.

It was also mentioned that the Additional Collector Saeed Akram, who was investigating the lawful clearance of around 340 vehicles under Amnesty Scheme has recently finalized and submitted his report before the FBR in which he presented charged sheet and convicted Customs officials and officers, who were deputed in car group that time.

When contacted, Additional Collector Irfan Javed confirmed that the inquiry into the matter has entered in its final stage and the committee will soon reaches at its conclusion.
