LONDON: Toyota Motors has launched the new locally-assembled Toyota Camry Hybrid, aiming to produce some 7,000 units this year.
The all-new Toyota Camry Hybrid was launched by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
The group also launched a new assembly line at its plant here, which will be operated and managed by Assembly Services Sdn Bhd.
UMW Toyota chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said the group expects to roll out some 7,000 units of the all-new Toyota Camry over the next nine months.
“Between 2010 and 2015, UMW Toyota has so far invested close to RM180 million to assemble Toyota Camry CKD,” he said at the launch.
Earlier, Mustapa said Toyota first began its local assembly of its vehicles in 1968, and UMW Toyota launches first locally-assembled Toyota Camry Hybrid, aims to produce 7,000 units this year.
In 2014, Toyota saw its domestic sales rose 11.9% to 102,035 units from 91,185 units in 2013, expanding its market share to 15.3% in 2014 from 13.9% in 2013.
However, for the first time in its history, Toyota’s sales in January this year was overtaken by Honda and Nissan.
Toyota’s sales in January 2015 dropped by 63.4% to 4,604 units from 11,092 units in December last year, which was below its average monthly sales of 8,503 units in 2014. The Edge Markets, March 23, 2015.
