Viber uses your cell phone number as the identifier on your cell phone. Skype on the other hand, uses a username on your desktop or PC.

Cost of making calls

Calls are free on both Viber and Skype. You only pay on Skype if you make calls to landlines and mobile phones. Viber, being a mobile app is easier to use on your mobile phone when compared to Skype. Skype rates are very cheap when compared to traditional landline or mobile rates, especially when making international calls. WhatsApp has not revealed the costs of making calls to landlines.

Data consumption

Skype consumes more data when compared to Viber. Skype not only consumes a lot of data, but also a lot of memory and processing power. Viber is next. Whatsapp is a very light app and even with the voice calling feature, it is not expected to use a lot of resources like its counterparts.

Variety of features

Skype has very many features when compared with Viber. For instance, you can have many people participating in a call. There are also advanced settings and configurations, premium plans, and service plans. There are also call recording features. There is hardware which you can use with Skype, for instance, microphones, web cameras, and headsets.

Quality

If you want quality, features and a huge user base, then go for Skype. It offers high quality calls, for both voice and video for both the mobile and PC versions of the app. Skype uses HD voice and enhanced codecs. It is not easy to beat Skype in this regard. The only thing that maybe Whatsapp can do is roll out a great interface with quality that is reliable.

User-friendliness

While Viber and Skype voice calling features are already giants, they face competition from their counterpart WhatsApp. This is because Whatsapp is accessible to very many users. However, when it comes to ease of use, Whatsapp and Viber take the crown. They are more user-friendly thus appeal to more users.

Logs

On Viber, the call log shows the made, missed, and received calls. WhatsApp might feature the same log on its voice calling feature. According to one of the users who have the update rolling, if you try to call someone who does not have the update, the call forces them to download the tool.

Translation

Skype was among the first firms to employ VoIP. It launched a translator and the beta version allows people to speak in another language. The tool translates the language and provides both a text and spoken translations. The public version launched with English and Spanish translations. The Microsoft-owned firm wants to add more than 40 languages. Google launched a live translation tool. This might enable Viber and WhatsApp to follow pursuit.

If you make voice calls using your mobile phone, go for Viber. It uses less data, and your mobile phone number for identification. On PC or desktop, Skype reigns supreme. If your device’s memory can hold both, it is better to have both. This way, you reap the benefits of having both VoIP systems. When WhatsApp’s voice calling feature is done, it might be the best among the three systems. For now, we can only speculate.
