FRANCE: The Mars rover Opportunity is once again suffering problems with its electronic memory systems according to
These latest issues are the first in a week and occurred after engineers reformatted its memory at the mobile laboratory located on the surface of Mars. The action was carried out in an attempt to cut down or eliminate periodic memory issues that have plagued the space-craft.
Its flash memory was disrupted. Flash memory is used in order to store data during nighttime as systems power down to save energy generated by solar panels during the day. There are around seven flash memory banks available to computer processors aboard Opportunity. In Dec 2014, mission engineers rerouted data away from these banks and stored the data into a volatile memory for the night that requires power to operate. Recently the team decided to re-engage the flash memory systems but were succeeded to bring six units online. Researchers have not yet identified any underlying cause for the memory problems.
Opportunity rover was launched to Mars on July 7, 2003 and reached the planet on Jan 25 2004. It was designed to function for 90 days but is working for the past 11 years after landing on the Red Planet.
