Prices start at $349 (NZ460), but can go as high as $17,000 for a luxury edition in gold.

Store workers will be able to show people the range of options, including different watch cases, bands and sizes, but they won’t be able to walk out with a watch.

The first orders ship out on April 24 and buyers can either have watches sent directly to their homes or arrange to return to a store for pickup.

Samsung, Motorola, Sony and other companies have already have been selling smart watches but none have been a hit. The market will be watching to see if Apple’s device changes the game.

Apple’s new laptop, simply called MacBook, also debuts Friday along with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 phones.
