DUBLIVE: A new magnetic field detector has been developed by a team from MIT that they claim is 1,000 times more efficient than previous models. Measuring magnetic fields is fascinating for both geologists and those in the medical field. MIT’s new laser-based magnetic field detector is said to allow for much more in depth geological exploration and medical imaging.
This laser light is shone through synthetic diamonds with nitrogen vacancies; points where carbon atoms are missing from the diamond lattice. As the laser’s light passes through these vacancies, photons bump an electron in the field into a higher energy state then this magnetic energy can affect the spin of that electron when its energy state descends back down which causes a difference in the new energy level.
Measuring these differences in the states of energy will allow scientists to determine the strength of a magnetic field.
