MAURY COUNTY: Maury County customs have uncovered an operation involving the alleged smuggling of drugs and contraband into the county jail.
Detectives said they knew drugs were getting into the building, but they didn’t know how. The big break in the case came in a dentist office bathroom.
According to detective Roscoe Voss, in mid-February inmates were at a local dental office.
That’s when detectives say a woman came in, asked about the cost of a procedure, then nervously asked to use the bathroom.
“She went in and stayed a few seconds and then left. The staff felt something was out of the ordinary and they notified the transportation officers. They went into the restroom and under the toilet tank found a package,” explained Voss.
Voss told News 2 the package contained rolled up tobacco and Xanax pills that were going to be smuggled into the jail where they are either used by inmates or sold or traded.
Customs officers say Jacob Goethe orchestrated the operation. The 23 year old was already in jail on a parole violation. A Maury County Grand Jury later indicted Goethe on charges of conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal institution.
According to officials, Goethe gave his girlfriend, Destiny Deweese, information on when Maury County prisoners would be visiting the dentist office.
Authorities said Deweese went to that office where she taped Xanax and cigarettes to the back of a toilet.
When News 2 spoke with Goethe, he denied giving his girlfriend those details.
“I just talked on the phone. That’s all there is to that one,” he said.
“Through some phone call conversations we overheard Mr. Goethe speaking to his girlfriend Destiny Deweese and giving her specific instructions on could she make it to the dentist office or doctor’s office in a certain time, and once she got there where to put it how to get it there and to expect text messages with more information,” Voss explained.
According to Voss, Deweese was at the jail visiting Goethe a few weeks later. While she was there, detectives searched her car and found Xanax and $1,700 in cash.
A check of her cell phone yielded the third person arrested, Ronald Benjamin. Authorities said he packaged the tobacco and drugs that were smuggled into the jail. All three suspects are due in court April 13.
