LONDON: The TMT construction rallies gained another momentum as the “Protect Mauna Kea” movement marched across the islands. Native Hawaiians and supporters are rallying against the construction of the giant telescope atop the Big Island Summit.
During the rally attended by at least 100 students and teachers, they delivered a letter to Vice Chancellor John McKee’s office. The letter was said to be from the Puko’s Council, the Native Hawaiian advisory council of the University of Hawaii, calling on the administration to “heed our advice and stop the TMT construction on Mauna Kea indefinitely.”
“The University of Hawaii is the steward of Mauna Kea, and the construction of the TMT represents extreme disrespect and devaluation of Hawaiians,” the letter states. “This is unacceptable.”
This walk out rally was part of the system wide walkout at eight of the 10 UH campuses. Among the campuses that participated were UH-MC, Hawaii Community College, Kapiolani Community College, Windward Community College, UH-Manoa, Honolulu Community College, Kauai Community College and UH-West Oahu.
