Tax Directory: 45 lawmakers yet to file tax returns

ISLAMABAD: As many as 45 parliamentarians including eight MNAs and seven Senators  have not yet filed their income tax returns.

According to finalised Tax Directory issued by the FBR, out of total 1,172 parliamentarians, 1,127 have filed their income tax returns till February 28, 2014, indicating there are 45 non-filers.

Despite extending deadlines time and again, there are some parliamentarians who are still non-filers of income tax returns. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar while releasing tax details of Parliamentarians said that to-date all the parliamentarians have obtained their NTNs and out of total 1,172 parliamentarians, 1,127 have filed their Income Tax Returns for the tax year ended on 30 June 2013 and for the remaining parliamentarians, due process is being undertaken.

The directory has been compiled from returns filed manually and electronically (till February 28, 2014). Manually filed returns have been entered into the system. All discrepancies reported have been corrected. This directory may be treated as final edition. Certain parliamentarian, whose names are marked by have share income as members of Associations of Persons. Since, Association of Persons pay tax as a separate entity, such share is not taxable in the hands of the members. Hence, tax paid on such share is not reflected in their personal returns, tax directory added.

The MNAs who did not file their income tax returns included MNA from NA-38 Tribal areas, NA-152 Syed Javed Ali Shah, NA-236 Roshan Din Junejo, NA-248 Shahjehan Baloch, NA-268 Sardar Kamal Khan Bangulzai and NA-272 Syed Essa Noori. There are a few MPs who paid income support levy on their income. Among Senators, Osman Saifullah Khan paid income support levy of Rs379,247 and income tax amounting to Rs2.739 million, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar paid income levy of Rs2,701,786 and income tax Rs824,891 and Senator Prof Sajid Mir paid income support levy of Rs21,219 and income tax Rs109, 597.

Among MNAs who paid income support levy included Sheikh Aftab Ahmed (Rs19,475) and income tax Rs315,313, Federal Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif Rs19,607 as income levy and Rs58,719 as income tax, Makhdoom Ali Hussain Gilani paid Rs14,333 as income support levy but paid no income tax and Tariq Christopher Qaiser paid Rs568, 859 as income support levy and paid Rs27,456 as income tax.
