The Ely Border Station is located in the National Forest Service Complex in Ely, Minnesota.  The station is a seasonal facility, open during the summer tourist season, May 23 to September 5.  It serves individuals arriving from Canada via the Boundary Water Canoe Area.  There are no roads into or out of Canada in this remote wilderness area.  All travel into and from Canada is by non-motorized small boat, canoe, kayak and aircraft.

Applications for the I-68 permit can be made in person at the Ely Border Station during normal business hours or the Grand Portage Port of Entry.  The I-68 permit allows boaters to enter the United States from Canada for recreational purposes and report their arrival to CBP from a telephone at their earliest opportunity.
