VILNIUS: Lithuanian Customs detained €11 million smuggled and illegally goods in first quarter of 2015, said a Customs officer.
Tobacco products remain the most popular smuggled goods. The customs officers have detained almost 100 million pcs, 5 million packages of cigarettes, whose assessed value is €10.8 million. This is three times more than during the same period of the previous year, 28.5 million pcs. of cigarettes (1 million 427 thousand packages) worth over €3 million were detained at that time.
Unlike in the past few years, when the largest quantities of tobacco products were detained on the Lithuanian – Belarusian border, the Lithuanian customs officers increasingly often detain this year products brought from Latvia. If the illegal cigarettes, with or without the banderols of the Republic of Belarus, detained during the previous year and brought from Latvia comprised only 8.2 million pcs., this year the similar quantity of illegal tobacco (10 million pcs.) was detained during the first months of the year.
