LONDON: Huawei launched its new flagship handset, the P8 and also launched a larger phablet variant of the P8, called the P8 Max for buyers looking for more real estate, with essentially the same features of the original P8 at a packed event in London.
As expected, the company dropped the Ascend moniker with its new flagship, and decided to go solo with the naming. The Ascend P7 will therefore be the last handset from the company sporting the Ascend moniker.
Notably, Huawei is looking to take on the likes of Samsung and Apple with its new flagship handset, the P8. The company highlighted two key points that would go a long way in making the P8 stand out, and rival the Galaxy S6/Galaxy S6 Edge and the iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus head on: design and camera, at the event.
Let’s take a brief look at their specifications one by one. The flagship P8 handset features a metal unibody design with a 5.2-inch full-HD IPS LCD display with a 1080×1920 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protective covering. It is powered by Huawei’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 930/935 64 bit Octo Core chipset clocked at 2GHz with 3GB RAM.
The P8 comes in two internal memory variants: 16GB and 64GB with both supporting expandable storage via micro-SD. The device runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop out-of-the-box with the company’s own Emotion UI on top.
It sports a 13MP rear autofocus camera with optical image stabilization and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. There is also an 8MP front-facing camera. The handset supports 4G LTE and Huawei’s new ‘Signal+ Technology’ which is said to connect with network roaming services around three times faster than the average handset.
It is backed by a 2680 mAh battery.
The P8 Max on the other hand is a larger phablet avatar of the original P8 wherein most of the specifications remain the same.
The key difference is that the P8 Max features a larger 6.8-inch display with the same full-HD resolution and a larger 4360 mAh battery. Also, instead of an 8MP front camera it sports a 5MP shooter on the front.
The P8 has been priced at Euro 499 (16GB) and Euro 599 (64GB) in the UK. The P8 Max on the other hand is priced at Euro 549 (16GB) and Euro 649 (64GB).
