NEW DELHI: Delhi customs has arrested a Peruvian national from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the Capital for allegedly trying to smuggle around 1,300 gram of banned drug cocaine into the country.
Customs claim to have busted an international drug trafficking module which smuggled the banned drug into Delhi from Brazil.
The seized contraband is stated to be worth `6.5 crore in the international market, a senior official of Customs (Crime), Ravindra Yadav said.
Following a tip-off, the accused, identified as Armando Lopes Reyes (64), was arrested on Monday when he was trying to exit the airport after he arrived from Sao Paulo in Brazil via Dubai.
The drug was concealed in the cavities of the trolley handle of Reyes’ bag, and wrapped in four layers of plastic, silver foil, black PVC and wrapper to avoid X-ray detection, Yadav said.
“We have recovered 1,295 gram of high-quality cocaine from him. The consignment is one of the biggest seizures of ‘Pure Cocaine’ in the history of the smuggling case,” the senior officer said, adding that the Sao Paulo-Delhi route is a highly lucrative one for smugglers.
