EUROPE: A necropsy on a found dead sperm whale in Pacifica revealed that it suffered trauma, the possible cause of its death. The sperm whale was washed ashore at Sharp Park State Beach.
At least 20 veterinarians, marine biologists and researchers examined the 49-foot whale. The team wanted to found out the cause of death and to understand why it was washed to Mori Point. According to the team’s initial investigation, the male sperm whale had signs of trauma.
Marine Mammal Center spokeswoman Laura Sherr verified that the mammal had no broken bones but there were signs of hemorrhaging on its bones. If there was any sign of trauma, Sherr said it was not from a sharp strike.
Sherr added that there were squid beaks inside the whale’s stomach, an indication that it had been eating prior to its death.
