CATOOSA: March tonnage figures showed increased activity compared to the previous month, with a total of 166,007 tons of waterborne cargo travelling through the Port.
By comparison, the February totals were 148,335 tons. As in February, seasonal fluctuations and some short-term maintenance outages resulted in less fertilizer being shipped in March. However, other commodities, such as steel and wheat, had typical volumes. In fact, inbound steel showed an increase, as did outbound wheat.
The Port continues to assist the more than 70 industries located in its industrial park with finding skilled workers and as part of that program will once again team up with Tulsa Technology Center to host a Job Fair at the Port from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21. More than 10 Port industries have already signed up to participate.
“This type of event is not only good for the Port, but also helps strengthen the regional economy,” said David Page, Chairman of the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority.
“We had more than two dozen companies participate in the last job fair, and more than 200 applicants,” Page said.
Total shipping for the entire McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System in March was 977,507 tons. Of that total, 489,680 tons were shipped through Oklahoma. The Port handled 17 percent of the cargo shipped on the navigation system last month, and 34 percent of the cargo that moved through Oklahoma.
