LONDON: When Hubble was first launched, no one knew it would be a rousing success. Surely it wasn’t a success. It was disrupted by regular problems but after scores of years, the unique telescope proved its worth by making worthy accompalisments that have transformed our vision of the solar system. Hubble helped us see far away worlds and it enahnced our understanding of the space.
Now Hubble that was launched on April 24, 1990 is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The telescope was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble and is worth $1.5 billion at the time of launch. It is powered by a couple of 25 feet solar panels.
Hubble is also credited with finding the age of the universe which is 13.7 billion years old.
“There is no doubt it was a game changer,” said Geoff McHarg, who heads the Air Force Academy’s space physics and atmospheric research center.
“It has directly imaged some exo-planets,” said Devin Della-Rose, who heads astronomical research at the academy.
“It launched in 1990 and I was on top of the world,” remembered John Troeltzsch, a senior program manager for Ball Aerospace.
