MEXICO: Leading conservationists are concerned about an isolated population of wolves that are living on an island in Lake Superior. The population is down to just three animals. Experts are worried about their survival.
Just a couple of adults and one pup have managed to survive on Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park according to researchers based on Michigan Technological University who conducted their yearly Winter Study.
Wolves and moose on Isle Royal have been the subject of 57 continuous years of observation in the world’s longest running prey-predator study.
In addition to the three wolves observers noted that a couple of visiting wolves that arrived at the island over a temporary ice bridge but later on the returned to the mainland. Researcehrs say they have tracked a growing gap between the wolf predators and their moose prey. Wolves’ numbers drooped from 24 in 2006 to three by now. The past winter there were nine wolves on the island. There is a bit of cocnern over the pup that is 9 months old and appears sick. He has a deformed tail and a hunched posture.
