NEW YORK: Two pounds of cocaine were found hidden in the soles of a pair of running shoes a man tried to smuggle into the region on a flight from Guyana, officials said.
“An arriving passenger at John F. Kennedy International Airport tried to ‘sneak’ past U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers, but was stopped in his tracks,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated in an announcement of the April 7 incident.
Thenga Adams, a Guyanese citizen who had flown from the capital, Georgetown, was arrested after customs officers at JFK found the running shoes in his luggage, opened the soles and discovered the drug, which had an estimated street value of $30,000, the customs agency said.
Adams faces federal drug smuggling charges, and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn.
