NAIROBI: Two trucks impounded at Malaba boarder ferrying AP uniforms into the country had underpaid duty through mis-invoicing.
Mis-invoicing is the intentional misstating of the value, quantity or composition of goods.
The altered information on the Customs declaration forms and invoices is usually meant to evade taxes or facilitate money laundering.
Speaking to the Star on Thursday, a Kenya Revenue Authority official said out of the 21,380 pairs of jungle uniforms nabbed in the two trucks, 900 pairs had not been cleared by Customs officials in Uganda.
The source said they uniforms were being ferried into the country illegally.
Two trucks, a Fuso UAT 757E and a Mitsubishi KBU 036K, were on Wednesday impounded in Malaba.
The KRA official said a prominent businessman in Malaba town, who is yet to be questioned, was involved in the clearance of the cargo.
The cargo also constituted materials used in making the Kenya Police band uniforms.
Teso North deputy OCPD Boniface Wakhanu led the subcounty security team in verifying the cargo.
Three Ugandans and a Kenyan involved in the transportation of the consignment are helping police establish the destination of the goods.
KRA manager in charge of Malaba border Gallian Njeru has not issued a comment on the matter since Wednesday.
