KOCHI: Kerala customs department at Cochin International Airport seized 29 tortoises and 65 kilograms of peacock feathers from three passengers who were bound for Kuala Lumpur. The tortoises, similar to star tortoises, have market value of over $500 each.
Mohammad Beeran, from whom tortoises were apprehended, claimed he was innocent and tricked into the operation. Another two passengers, Raveeendran and Roshni, claimed they received peacock feathers from Chennai. Meanwhile, investigation in the matter is underway. The peacock feathers are worth around rupees 16.25 lakh ($25.83 thousand). The forest officials released the tortoises into the forests and the peacock feathers were also safely transported.
