LONDON: It’s time to get excited. NASA’s New Horizons is revealing new information about Pluto and the spacecraft won’t even arrive at the dwarf planet until July.
For the first time new images from New Horizons give scientists an idea of what Pluto’s surface is like, and if it has water.
NASA released images in a GIF captured in April from 70 million miles away using the telescopic camera on New Horizons. Scientists believe the dwarf planet may have a polar ice cap based on these images. Take a look below.
“After traveling more than nine years through space, it’s stunning to see Pluto, literally a dot of light as seen from Earth, becoming a real place right before our eyes,” said Alan Stern, New Horizons principal investigator. “These incredible images are the first in which we can begin to see detail on Pluto, and they are already showing us that Pluto has a complex surface.”
New Horizons will arrive 7,800 miles from Pluto’s surface later this summer on July 14.
