Customs foils bid to smuggle Rs 15m diamonds, gold, two arrested

LAHORE: The special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has granted a three-day physical remand of two suspects in a case of smuggling heavy quantity of gold and diamonds from Sharjah to Lahore.

As per details accused Rana Muhammad Rafique Farooq Aslam was coming from Sharjah with his counterpart Sara, when they were booked by the customs at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore here on Thursday. Customs intvestigation and prosecution team presented them to the court and asked for three-day physical remand of the couple for further investigation. The court accepted the request of customs investigation and prosecution and granted remand of Sara and M Rafique.

According to Customs Today sources Muhammad Rafique and his colleague Sara were not married. They depict themselves as married couple, but after investigation it was found that they are not married. They are professional smugglers and live with each other just for the sake of smuggling and other illegal activities. Muhammad Rafique is a resident of Lahore while Sara is from Karachi.

Earlier Model Customs Collectorate Lahore Preventive was foiled a diamonds, gold smuggling bid worth Rs 15 million at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore and impounded millions of rupees diamonds, gold and gold watches from passengers travelling from Sharjah to Lahore.

Passenger Sara and Rana Muhammad Rafique Farooq arrived at the airport by Air Blue flight PA-413 from Sharjah.

The customs authorities on information received through MCC Lahore Preventive Mukarram Jah Ansari stopped the passengers and undertook through search.

The search culminates in illegal import of 15-diamonds, 2.5 kg gold and eight gold watches of Rado brand, the sources explained, adding that the recovered valuables were assessed at Rs 15 millions.

Now the special court of Customs taxation and anti smuggling has handed over them to customs investigation and prosecution for three-day for investigation and recovery.
