NEW YORK: Companies from San Antonio and other Texas cities are poised to benefit from Mexico’s energy reforms, said organizers behind a new international business conference.

Both the U.S. Department of Commerce and the University of Texas at San Antonio’s International Trade Center are hosting the U.S./Mexico Oil & Gas Business Export Conference at the Omni Colonnade Hotel off IH-10 West this Friday.

Organizer Oscar Magaña with the Department of Commerce said the all-day event will inform American companies on how to take advantage of business opportunities in Mexico’s oil and gas industry.

“Our mission is to help U.S. companies succeed overseas,” Magaña said.

Just last year, Mexico opened up its energy markets to foreign investment for the first time in more than 70 years. The move will allow American companies to do a wider variety of energy projects south of the border.

With close to 100 people already registered, Magaña said participants will learn about what products and services are need in addition to legal advice and how to become a supplier for Mexico’s national oil company Petroleos Mexicanos, or PEMEX.

Speakers include officials with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City as well as representatives from companies already doing business in Mexico.

Magaña said the American companies from San Antonio and other Texas cities are poised to benefit in 10 specific areas:

  • Exploration of Wells
  • Mature Field Exploration
  • Deep Water Exploration
  • Offshore Platforms
  • Shale Gas Exploration
  • Natural gas capture at well heads
  • Safety Equipment
  • Oil Production
  • New Pipelines/Pipe Rehabilitation
  • Refineries
