Lahore Customs seizes mobile phones worth Rs 1.5m at airport

LAHORE: Lahore Customs Preventive Allama Iqbal Authorities have seized 50 mobiles of different brands, the official sources told Customs Today here on Wednesday.

The sources said that Airport Customs staff recovered 50 mobile phones of assorted Brand Models from Aftab Nawaz S/O Muhammad Nawaz arrived from Thailand by TG-345.

The total value of the 50 smart phones has been assessed as Rs15 Lakh, the sources added.

The sources said that Customs Authorities upon suspicion intercepted the accused and asked him if he had anything unlawful with his luggage but he replied in no.

However, the authorities recovered 50 smart phones when the accused and his belongings were searched thoroughly.

The customs sources said that a case has been registered and further investigations are underway.

Earlier the Airport authorities have seized 165 smart phones worth Rs2.7 million in two days.

Experts commenting on the rising phenomenon of mobile smuggling said that the smuggling of goods and articles always inches up following the government increases rate of customs duty and taxes.

Same is the case with the rising mobile phone as the government has increased tax rate on mobile phones, they added.
