According to scientists associated with a new study on ancient civilization in Cahokia, they have discovered that at Cahokia, the largest prehistoric settlement in the Americas north of Mexico, major flood events in the Mississippi River valley caused its sharp decline.
Cahokia experienced regular flood events before AD 600 and after AD 1200. After a major flood in 1200, there was a time when the population in the region started to decline that further led to abandonment of the region about 200 years later.
According to some previous studies, usually, droughts are considered as one of the major factors leading to the decline of a number of early agricultural societies in North America and across the globe. The new findings of the study have suggested new ideas and avenues for researchers to explore.
