Trade deficit with India plunges in April as compared to March 2015

LAHORE: Pakistan is importing a number of items from India through Wagha Border and its deficit is increasing gradually.

Over the years, trade regulation between Pakistan and India has been eased, especially after 2007 and it reached $2.4 billion in 2013 with the increment of 21 percent as compared to the previous year.  Annual trade through road increased from Rs 6.5 billion in 2007 to Rs 15 billion in 2010-11. After the Integrated Check Post (ICP) was opened at Atari on April 13, 2012 to improve road trade, around 500 trucks have been crossing the border everyday and it is increasing day by day.

Pakistan trade deficit with India is an issue since the first day as Indian economy is too large as compared to Pakistan. During March 2015 Pakistan exported items worth Rs 785 million to India through Wagha Border but on other hand total imports from India were stand at Rs 3.36 billion. There was a huge deficit between both countries but it was in favor of India. Total deficit with of trade was Rs 2551 million.

In April Pakistan exported items of worth Rs 893 million to India as compared to the imports of Rs 1.93 billion. Deficit here in April reached to 1037 million but trade was in favor of India too.

But trade deficit with India in April 2015 decreased to Rs 1498 million as compared to the Rs 2551 million in March.
