ABUJA: Kayode Fayinto, the National Public Secretary, Association of Nigeria Licences Customs Agents (ANLCA) said the ongoing Ships and Ports football Competition would further cement the relationship of workers in the maritime sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is taking place at the National Stadium, Lagos.
According to him, the football competition is a grassroots initiative that is organised for the industry.
He called on everyone in the maritime industry to be part of it.
”This is a way of giving back to the community; we should come together and support the grassroots initiative by the organisers of the competition which is in its seventh edition.
”Although those of us in ANCLA are taking part in the competition for the first time, but we are proud of what we have seen so far.
“We hope many companies in the industry can likewise throw their moral and financial support into the initiative that can promote unity in the sector,” Fayinto said.
NAN reports that, the debutant, ANCLA, shocked three times champions of the competition, Nigeria Customs in one of the matches.
ANCLA defeated Customs 3-0 to qualify for the semifinals, having played 0-0 draw with SIFAX Group on their first game.
ANCLA with four points from two games will play defending champions National Associations of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) in the group A final match on May 11.
NAGAFF, is currently having a poor run in the competition, as the team lost 0-1 to Customs and 0-3 to SIFAX in their two group matches played.
In the group B matches, Micura Stevedoring Services are only team that had won all its matches played.
The team recorded a 2-1 victory over Dominion Divine Clearing Agency and edged pass ENL Consortium, 3-0.
Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) with four points from two games defeated ENL 2-1 in their opening group match.
The team played 1-1 draw with Dominion could qualify it for semifinals.
NPA last match is against Micura.
NAN reports that eight maritime companies are competing for honours in the 2015 edition of the Ships and Ports Cup.
The competition which began in May 2 ends May 15. (NAN)
